The greatest challenges we face today were produced by design, and must be solved by design.
They originated in optimism: most of all, the optimism of the industrial revolution. We have to understand our place in history and embrace the optimistic outlook that got us here. But we must refine that outlook with informed thinking.
Only with fact-based optimism can we apply design to such massive problems as hunger, disease, climate change, and globalization.
